4Great mat!Aug 11, 2008
By E. Gilson
This is a wonderful mat. No funky rubbery smell because its a mixture of natural fibers and PER, which also makes it super easy to keep my grip; now my hands rarely slip no matter how much I sweat (unlike with my previous mat, a junky Gaiam one). I only give it 4 stars instead of 5 because bits of the material are starting to come off with wear, but I've had it for about a year ago and use it pretty frequently (3-4 times a week) so I guess that's to be expected!

3Excellent mat, but...Aug 30, 2008

Good size, much less odor than rubber mats, and great grip. However, the natural fibers of the mat can be very itchy and uncomfortable until you wear it in a little.

5Wonderful!!!Nov 02, 2008

I love this mat. It has no smell, and it is very soft. It is great on carpet but I do have to put another mat underneath it on wood floors because it is thin.

4Needs more gripMar 04, 2010
By T. Noah
I do yoga asanas 4 times a week. Before this mat I used a thicker, blue $20 mat from walmart and after learning of hard chemicals used in the production of those mats and needing more grip I opted for this mat.
It is noticibly heavier, but more compact when rolled up.

I slipped on the walmart mat (thick model, not the really thin ones) only when sweating heavily, but this one i'll slip when im bone dry and easily when I'm slightly perspiring. Perhaps this is normal for a new mat with this type of eco friendly material coating on top of the jute?

I hope the original coating or whatever will break off or break in and get stickier. I was really wanting a 100% jute mat with the rough plant fibers on the surface, which I would imagine would give excellent traction and a very pleasant natual plant fiber feeling, but no mats are made in this way that im aware of.

For now this is a good mat for me if only because its more eco friendly than my previous mat, and hoping wont leech chemicals into my skin, but the traction is poor for being advertised as "a jute mat, the grippiest of mat materials", and it would be, if it were actually jute on the surface. The market should advertise jute mats as environmental friendly and renewable, natural and all that good stuff, but not recommend jute mats as the grippiest of mats, when the actual jute fiber isnt even the part of the mat that is in contact with your hands, but instead a very smooth and slippery top layer of synthetic material.

Thanks I hope you find this review helpful.

5A great matOct 06, 2010

I've been using this mat for nearly a month now (yoga 2-4 times/week) and it's held up very well. It's a little longer then other mats, I'm 6'2" and find the length just about right (it is slightly narrower then other mats I've used). It is a little scratchy on legs and arms, however I didn't find it bothersome; it's definitely not an artificial cheep "soft" plastic mat.

I've never slipped once, always have grip, even when hands/feet/mat is moist. The backing is perfect for slippery wood floors, I don't have issues with it bunching up either. There is no chemical smell (though it does have a slight odor when first unboxed), however I would like to know more about this "PER" material, can't seem to find much reference to its composition/manufacturing anywhere.

When rolled up it seems a little larger then other mats, probably due to its slightly longer length, but it's surprisingly light. The mat is a standard thickness, however, I find some kneeling poses slightly uncomfortable; sitting poses are fine. If you have "boney" knees/elbows, you'll either have to toughen up or use some extra padding (I don't find it distracting).

Over all I'd recommend this mat and look forward to enjoying it for many years.
