 Too Flimsy.Sep 20, 2010

This was so flimsy that it was crushed in the box when I got it. I could have pushed the dents out with my hands, it was that flimsy. I sent it back and bought the "Wald 137 Standard Medium Front Handlebar Bike Basket" and I mounted it on the back. Its more shallow than this one, but its longer and wider. I also have a net that I keep over it to keep things in place. Also, if I had mounted this, the little bar that it attaches to wouldn't have held up with my backpack.

I attached this basket to my bike rack and set out on a ride. Just a mile or so out, it fell off for the first time. I replaced it, made sure it was securely "hooked" onto the rack, and a mile later it fell off again. After that it never made it a mile.
It can be carried but the handle comes off if the load is too heavy, it's not very thick metal at all. I tried using it at the farmer's market and it was OK with lettuce and such but once I started adding eggs, potatoes, etc, I had to support it from the bottom.
I still use it (over a year now, and it is holding up well) because it is a nice size and I like being able to remove it, but I secure it with a bungee cord now. That's the only way it stays on.

This basket is made of a fine wire mesh, which is better than a wider "grid-style" wire basket, in that is prevents cords and webbing etc. from backpacks, purses, etc., from falling through the basket and into the tire/spokes zone. This basket fits a single paper bag of groceries and a few other small items on the side. One side of the basket has a lower top rail, which allows it to fit under wider mustache handlebars without interfering with the brakes, shifters, etc.
One major issue to point out, this basket claims to have hooks that allow you to attach it to a bike rack. Well, that is true, if you have a "Pletscher" style bike rack, like many old European bikes have. You can buy this rack new, or one like it here: Michelin Avenir Alloy Pletscher Style Rear Rack. The official swiss-made Pletscher brand is available at [...].
The spring-loaded "mousetrap" on these types of racks pins the basket against the rack, using the hooks on the bottom of the basket to hold it in place. I installed it once and haven't had to adjust it at all since. It's very secure. If you want, you can then easily take the basket off to use while shopping or for a picnic, etc., and then pop it right back on the bike when you're done. Much nicer than having to zip tie it in place. See the pictures I uploaded.
I think the basket strikes a great balance between durability and light weight. It's certainly not the strongest thing out there, I wouldn't carry cinder blocks around in it, but it does everyday cargo admirably, especially for the price.

I like this basket. It fits my bike well and is just what I wanted. The little clamp slider on the bottom didn't hold very well to my bike so I attached it with zip ties. I can't take it on and off my bike but at least I have a basket to carry my stuff around town.

Very nice basket design, but the hook attachment on the bottom doesn't work with all rear wheel luggage racks. I made mine work by snipping off the hook, then securing the basket to my rack using bolts, washers, and nuts. I think it's more stable and certainly more secure now, but it isn't easily removable. This isn't a product flaw, it's my error.
